Launceston, by the Tamar River, is the third oldest city in Australia,and is well known for its heritage buildings from the early days of colonization of Tasmania.

With a population of over 95,000 in the Greater Launceston area, the city is the regional centre for retail, commerce, health, education, recreation and cultural facilities, as well as tourism. Secondary industries of the area include agriculture, fishing, and forestry. Health needs are serviced by the Launceston General Hospital and two private hospitals. Launceston has a full range of educational institutions including private schools, the University of Tasmania Launceston Campus, and the Australian Maritime College. The Launceston Airport area is a steady growth area, with modern warehousing facilities and car rentals.

Sport is well catered for, with a world class sporting and entertaining venue at Aurora Stadium at York Park, which hosts AFL matches, and most recently acclaimed entertainer Sir Elton John.

Work is currently under way on construction of a Regional Aquatic Centre at Windmill Hill near central Launceston.

The Mowbray Horse Racing complex is also undergoing an upgrade, and is the home to thoroughbreds and pacers, as well as having a greyhound track.

One of Tasmania’s best known tourist attractions, the Cataract Gorge, is an easy walk from the city centre, and is popular for picnics and swimming in the First Basin, as well as having restaurant facilities, and superb gardens and trees. A Casino has been in the Prospect Vale area now for 25 years.

The area around Launceston and along the Tamar Valley is well known for producing award winning wine, and the Wine Route is very popular with tourists. In recent years the restaurant industry has flourished, with many first class cafes and restaurants.

Other popular activities in the area include river cruises and yachting, bushwalking, and skiing on Ben Lomond in winter. Tennis, golf, and bowls are all popular pastimes.
